Crack spreads are driven by refinery economics: seasonal demand for gasoline (summer) and heating oil (winter), refinery capacity utilization, and crude oil quality differentials. These factors create predictable seasonal patterns that spread traders exploit year after year.
Analyzing Spread Opportunities
Effective spread trading requires specific analytical tools that differ from directional trading analysis.
Historical Spread Charts
Plot the spread (price difference between the two legs) as its own chart. Apply support and resistance analysis, moving averages, and Fibonacci levels to the spread chart rather than to individual contract prices. Seasonal Analysis
