Why Position Sizing Determines Your Survival
You can have a 70% win rate and still blow up your account. It sounds impossible, but it happens every day in futures markets. The culprit is always the same: poor position sizing.
Position sizing answers a simple question: how many contracts should you trade? Get it right and a modest edge compounds into consistent growth. Get it wrong and a few bad trades wipe out weeks of profits — or worse, your entire account.
In futures trading, this question carries extra weight. Leverage amplifies everything. One NQ contract controls $100,000+ in notional value. One ES contract controls $275,000+. A 1% adverse move on an oversized position can destroy 10–20% of a small account in minutes. Risk management starts with position sizing — everything else is secondary.
Risk of Ruin: The Math That Keeps Traders Alive
Risk of ruin is the probability that you lose enough capital to stop trading. For most futures traders, this threshold is a 50% drawdown — a hole so deep that the psychological and mathematical recovery becomes nearly impossible.
The Recovery Problem
Drawdowns are asymmetric. A 10% loss requires an 11.1% gain to recover. A 25% loss requires a 33.3% gain. A 50% loss requires a 100% gain — you need to double your remaining capital just to get back to even. This asymmetry is why preventing large drawdowns is more important than maximizing gains.
- 10% drawdown → 11.1% recovery needed

The Risk of Ruin Formula
Risk of ruin depends on three variables: your win rate, your reward-to-risk ratio, and the percentage of capital risked per trade.
For a trader with a 55% win rate and 1.5:1 reward/risk ratio:

The 1% Rule: Foundation of Futures Position Sizing
The most widely-used position sizing rule in professional trading: never risk more than 1% of your account on a single trade.
How to Calculate It
Step 1: Determine your account size. Step 2: Calculate 1% of that. Step 3: Divide by your stop loss in dollars per contract.
Example on ES futures:
- Account size: $50,000
- 1% risk = $500
- Stop loss: 5 points = $250 per contract (ES moves $50 per point)
- Position size: $500 / $250 = 2 contracts
Example on NQ futures:
- Account size: $50,000
- 1% risk = $500
- Stop loss: 20 points = $400 per contract (NQ moves $20 per point)
- Position size: $500 / $400 = 1 contract (round down — never round up)
For Smaller Accounts: Micro Futures
If the 1% rule produces a position size of less than 1 standard contract, trade Micro NQ (MNQ) or Micro ES (MES) instead. MNQ moves $2 per point (vs. $20 for NQ). MES moves $5 per point (vs. $50 for ES). This lets a $10,000 account trade proper position sizes while respecting the 1% rule.
- $10,000 account, 1% risk = $100
- MNQ stop at 20 points = $40 per contract → 2 MNQ contracts
- MES stop at 5 points = $25 per contract → 4 MES contracts
The margin requirements for micro contracts are proportionally lower, making them accessible for smaller accounts without sacrificing position sizing discipline.
The Kelly Criterion: Mathematically Optimal Sizing
The Kelly Criterion calculates the theoretically optimal fraction of capital to risk per trade. Developed by mathematician John Kelly Jr. at Bell Labs in 1956, it maximizes the long-term growth rate of a portfolio.
The Formula
Kelly % = (W x R - L) / R
Where: W = win probability, L = loss probability (1 - W), R = reward-to-risk ratio (average win / average loss).
Example: 60% win rate, 1.5:1 reward/risk
- Kelly % = (0.60 x 1.5 - 0.40) / 1.5
- Kelly % = (0.90 - 0.40) / 1.5
- Kelly % = 0.50 / 1.5
- Kelly % = 33.3%
Why You Should Use Half-Kelly or Less
Full Kelly is mathematically optimal but practically dangerous. It assumes perfect knowledge of your win rate and reward/risk — which you never have. Real trading has variance, changing market conditions, and estimation errors. Full Kelly produces massive drawdowns (50%+ swings are normal).
Professional traders use half-Kelly (divide the Kelly result by 2) or quarter-Kelly. In the example above, half-Kelly is 16.7% and quarter-Kelly is 8.3%. Even quarter-Kelly is aggressive by futures standards. Most practitioners find that 1–3% risk per trade (which is often close to quarter or fifth Kelly for a decent strategy) strikes the best balance between growth and survivability.
Fixed Fractional vs. Fixed Dollar Position Sizing
Fixed Fractional (Percentage-Based)
Risk a fixed percentage of your current account value on each trade. As your account grows, position sizes increase. As your account shrinks, position sizes decrease. This natural scaling protects you during drawdowns (you risk less as the account declines) and accelerates growth during winning streaks.
This is the recommended approach for most futures traders. It adapts automatically and prevents the common mistake of trading the same size during a drawdown as during peak equity.
Fixed Dollar
Risk a flat dollar amount per trade regardless of account size. Simple, but it does not adapt. After a drawdown, you are risking a larger percentage of your reduced account. After growth, you are risking a smaller percentage and leaving potential gains on the table.
Fixed dollar sizing works for beginners learning to trade with consistent risk amounts. Once you have 50+ trades of data, switch to fixed fractional.
Account Size Minimums for Futures
Position sizing rules create effective minimum account sizes for each futures product.
- ES (E-mini S&P 500): $25,000+ to trade 1 contract with a 5-point stop at 1% risk. For proper position sizing flexibility, $50,000+ is ideal.
- NQ (E-mini Nasdaq): $40,000+ for 1 contract with a 20-point stop at 1% risk.
- MES (Micro E-mini S&P): $5,000+ for proper sizing with 1% risk.
- MNQ (Micro Nasdaq): $5,000+ for proper sizing with 1% risk.
If your account is below these thresholds, trade micro contracts exclusively. Under-capitalization is the number one account killer in futures trading — not bad strategy, not bad timing, but simply trading too large for the account size.
Adjusting Position Size by Setup Quality
Not every trade deserves the same size. Advanced traders vary position size based on setup quality.
A-Grade Setups (Full Size)
Multiple confluences, strong market internals alignment, time of day is optimal. These get your standard 1% risk position.
B-Grade Setups (Half Size)
Decent setup but missing one confluence factor. Maybe market internals are neutral instead of confirming. Risk 0.5% instead of 1%.
C-Grade Setups (Skip or Minimum Size)
Marginal setup, taking it mostly out of boredom or FOMO. Either skip it entirely or trade minimum size (1 micro contract). Document these trades in your trade journal to see if they are actually net positive.
This tiered approach concentrates capital on your best setups and reduces exposure on lower-quality trades. Over time, it significantly improves your risk-adjusted returns.
Correlation and Portfolio-Level Risk
If you trade multiple futures contracts simultaneously, individual position sizing is not enough. You need portfolio-level risk management.
ES and NQ are highly correlated (0.85+ daily correlation). Being long 2 ES contracts and 2 NQ contracts is not diversification — it is concentrated directional risk. If the stock market drops, both positions lose simultaneously. Your true risk is the combined exposure, not each position in isolation.
For correlated positions, your total portfolio risk should not exceed 2–3% of account value. This means if you are already long 1 ES contract risking 1%, you should not add a full-size NQ position. Position Sizing During Drawdowns
Drawdowns demand position size reduction, not increase. The temptation to "trade bigger to make it back faster" is the single most destructive impulse in trading.
The Drawdown Protocol
- 0–5% drawdown: Normal. Trade full size. Stay disciplined.
- 5–10% drawdown: Reduce to 75% of normal position size. Review recent trades for pattern breaks.
- 10–15% drawdown: Reduce to 50% of normal size. Consider switching to sim trading for 1 week.

Position Sizing Across Different Strategies
